Women's Reservation Bill : Live Updates From Rajya Sabha

Nadda: How will someone born with a silver spoon in mouth understand the pain of the poor? But PM Modi does. He understands challenges faced by poverty-stricken sections, especially women, and is granting them their rights.

Nadda: Bharatiya Janata Party and Modi ji does pakka kam, not kachcha kam. The government must work in accordance with the rule of law. We are ensuring that this is being done in compliance with the law.

Nadda insists that bill cannot be enforced before 2029. LoP Mallikarjun Kharge interjects -

"Kal karne ka aaj karo, aaj karne ka ab karo. Pal mein pralay hoga, toh phir karenge kab? We are ready, it is not unconstitutional."

VP Jagdeep Dhankar interjects to recount how he would often encounter husbands of women representatives at panchayats - 'sarpanch pati', 'vidayak pati'.

"Yeh culture ab khatam ho gaya hain."

Nadda: When reservations were granted to women in panchayats, we heard all sorts of bad things. Now, research shows that women are more accessible than men as public representatives, they are also less likely to be corrupt.

Nadda: The 21st century is women's century. In science and tech, defence, education - our women have made significant strides. We don't view women as bechara, or abala, but as significant partners in society and nation building.  

Nadda: We have always viewed women as shakti, as devi, as the creator of the world and society. This is our Bharatiya sanskriti. Ab humko duniya samjhaigi ladies first? It is imperative to understand our culture.

BJP MP JP Nadda addresses criticism over bill's name -

"Many people have criticised the name, but the words reveal our govt and our PM's outlook towards women. In Bharatiya sanskriti, women have always had a significant role."

Ranjan: We want the rights that we deserve. Women are not charity cases. Hum na kabhi daya ka patra the, na kabhi honge. I support this bill but I urge its enforcement before a census and delimitation.

Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan raises concerns about the name of the bill -

"This is a constitutional right. This is not a divine boon or the gift of the Prime Minister. By linking the name to worshipping nari shakti, you have disrespected the history of revolution."
