The Bombay Bar Association, one of the oldest bar associations in the country, has sought the State Advocate General - Ashutosh Kumbhakoni's - intervention with the Maharashtra Government, to treat Bombay High Court's legal community as frontline workers and vaccinate them on a priority basis.

BBA president Senior Advocate Nitin Thakkar cited the example of the Delhi High Court, which registered a suo motu PIL on March 3, to vaccinate judges, court staff and lawyers, treating them as "frontline workers", without limitations of their age or physical condition.

"It is humbly requested that the State of Maharashtra may also consider and declare/ treat the Judges, high court staff and advocates practising in the Bombay High Court, so as to include them in the vaccination drive on a priority basis."

BBA has further sought for a vaccination centre to be set up in the HC premises. The letter requests the AG to use his good offices with the State.

"Sir, as the leader of our Bar, we sincerely and humbly request you to use your good offices and take this cause of the Bar with the Maharashtra Government. We are sure that your intervention will lead to a positive outcome in this regard."

The letter states that the Bombay High Court has been functioning 'tirelessly' even during the pandemic and from November the court has begun physical hearings, as well.

The letter adds, with a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in the city, it has become important to protect all stakeholders that actively participate in the functioning of the Bombay HC.

"Administration of Justice is an essential constitutional function and the stakeholders involved in the process who expose themselves to the risk of the pandemic are clearly frontline workers along with others who are helping in the functioning of the various other agencies of the government," the letter states.

Yesterday, two advocates from Raigad approached the HC in a PIL seeking vaccination against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus for the legal fraternity across the state.
