Women's Reservation Bill : Live Updates From Rajya Sabha

DMK MP R Girirajan: We welcome this bill. But question is, why has Modi govt not shown even 1% of concerns shown in controversial farm bills, CAA, removing special status of J&K, etc. People have apprehensions about timing.

TrinamoolCongress MP Mausam Noor: This govt is trying to bring a bill now, which it cannot implement in near future. Mr Prime Minister, if you are serious about this, ensure women's reservation in upcoming assembly and LS elections.

Patil: Yesterday, I saw photos of minister feeding mithai to Bollywood actresses. Why do they not go to homes of those who sacrificed their lives for the country in J&K, or the women in Manipur?

#BJP MP Saroj Pandey: Members criticised the bill over the inclusion of 'vandhan' in name. Yeh kaisi Bharat ki parampara hain? Bharat mata ka toh hum vandan hi karte hain, lekin kabhi India ka vandan nah hota hain.

Pandey: Women are historically oppressed. Un vanchit, peerit maahilaayon ke saath rajneeti kaisi? When the prime minister himself is trying to empower women, then, playing politics, or questioning his intention is not right.

#AGP MP Birendra Prasad Baishya: In '10, I was a member. When earlier bill was introduced, proceedings were adjourned. Which means it was intentionally stalled. Now, this bill is going to be implemented under PM Modi's leadership.

#JDU MP Ram Nath Thakur asks why #BJP did not introduce this bill in over 9 years since 2014 -

"Mujhe lagta hain unka niyaat saaf nahi hain mahilaayon ke prati. Let us all urge the govt to implement this bill immediately."

MDMK MP Vaiko: I rise to support the bill. But 15-year period after which women's reservation is proposed to be stopped should be extended. Delimitation should be undertaken at the earliest, provisions should be made for OBC women.

CPIM MP Elamaram Kareem: They say sabka saath sabka vikaas, but the BJP govt has one single person from largest minority in the country in the cabinet. Where is the sabka saath sabka vikaas? This is their attitude.

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha: In this country, there might be nothing in a name, but everything is in a surname. Some of our surnames have given us privilege, while others do not have that. This 33% should not affect existing quotas.
