The Supreme Court on Monday (06.11.2023), issued notice in an application moved by the Tamil Nadu Self Financing Medical Colleges Association (TNSFMCA) seeking Stray Counselling Round for filling up vacancies of Post Graduate Medical Seats in Tamil Nadu.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra while issuing notice observed that the issue would be considered after noting the number of seats vacant throughout the country. The matter shall be considered on November 24.

The plea has been filed seeking directions for extension of time for PG Medical Counselling 2023 for filling up vacancies that have remained unclaimed/unfilled despite the four rounds of counselling.

The plea points out that similar directions were issued by the Apex Court on 30th October, in the present matter pertaining to UG Counselling seeking a special Stray Round.

The petitioner association consists of 14 active members who are private self-financing medical colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. If another stray round is not conducted, thousands of PG seats would go vacant throughout the country which is a loss of national assets and against public interest, the petitioner has told the court in its plea.

Despite 4 rounds of counselling, in AIQ (All India Quota) and in Tamil Nadu State Quota several seats are still left vacant in the colleges, the Association has told the Court.

In Tamil Nadu, the Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education and Research conducted the 4 rounds of counselling of PG seats 2023. The schedule for the Stray Vacancy was published and was to be conducted between 16.10.2023 to 19.10.2023. As on 16.10.2023, the Tamil Nadu State Quota had 194 vacancies to be filled in Stray Rounds, the association has informed the court through its plea.

Adv. Raghav Shankar and AOR Vishnu Sharma A.S, appeared on behalf of TNSFMCA.
