Former Indian cricket team captain and the President of Hyderabad Cricket Association Mohammed Azharuddin has approached the Supreme Court challenging the contempt notice issued by the Telangana High Court in a dispute related to Nalgonda Cricket Association.
A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai, JB Pardiwala and SV Bhatti adjourned the matter to next week at the request of Azhar's counsel Senior Advocate Ramkanth Reddy.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
Nalgonda district cricket association(Association) had filed a petition before the Telangana High Court in 2021 to direct the Hyderabad cricket association to allow them to participate in 2-day league for 2021-22. The High Court passed an interim order allowing the same.
The Association had also filed a petition in a connected matter before the High Court to direct the Hyderabad Cricket Association, BCCI, and Mohammed Azharuddin to implement the orders passed by the Ombudsman Justice (Retd.) Narasimha Reddy in 2018.
In terms of the order, the Association contended they are entitled to all the benefits as an affiliated member of the Hyderabad Cricket Association which includes participating in all meetings, matches and tournaments.
In this matter, the counsel on behalf of Mohd. Azharuddin told the High Court that the Nalgonda association was permitted to participate in all the tournaments being conducted under the aegis of the Hyderabad Cricket Association, and it would continue even during the current season of 2022-23,
This statement was taken on record by the High Court. The Court directed that the Nalgonda Association shall be permitted to take part in all the tournaments during the current year's cricket season also.
Thereafter, the Association filed a contempt case in 2023 alleging deliberate and wilful disobedience of the orders of the High Court Orders passed in 2022.
The High Court issued a notice in the contempt case to Mohd Azharuddin seeking his personal appearance.
In February last year, the Supreme Court had directed the conduct of elections in the Hyderabad Cricket Association under the monitoring of former SC judge Justice L Nageswara Rao.
