The Supreme Court today (August 20) refused to entertain a petition seeking to declare the caste system as unconstitutional.

The petition was filed under Article 32 of the Constitution by the Petitioner-In-Person challenging the caste system to be against the fundamental rights. The bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was hearing the matter.

Refusing to entertain the petition, CJI said : "There are provisions in the constitution specifically referring to caste, to socially and educationally backward classes. The Constitution as originally drafted refers to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes"

The bench dismissed the petition finding lack of any merit.

"This is not a case for our interference, dismissed".
