The Supreme Court on Friday directed forthwith release of the amount of 2 crore deposited by Congress MP Karti Chidambaram. He had made the deposit based on a court direction as a condition to travel abroad.
A Bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice Krishna Murari and Justice V Ramasubramanian issued the direction after hearing submissions made by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Chidambaram.
Supreme Court had in February this year allowed Mr Chidambaram's application to travel abroad on a condition of depositing Rs. 2 crores. While granting him permission for a period of 6 months, the Court had directed him to furnish his itinerary of foreign travel and the places where he is going to stay.
During the hearing, Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal informed the Court that the amount deposited was to be given back to Mr Chidambaram after he got back to India. However even after a month of him having come back, the same has not been returned.
Karti Chidambaram, son of Senior Advocate and former Union Minister P Chidambaram, had to seek the permission of the top court to travel abroad as he is out on bail in the Aircel-Maxis, INX Media cases.
Mr Chidambaram is facing criminal cases which are being investigated by the ED and the CBI in relation to alleged money laundering in Aircel-Maxis, INX deals. While granting him bail, the Court had restrained him from leaving country except with Court's permission.
