References To IPC, CrPC & Evidence Act In Existing Laws To Be Read As References To BNS, BNSS & BSA : Centre Issues Notification

    The Central Government has issued a notification to the effect that any reference of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, in any existing statute, rule, regulation, order or notification will be read as a reference to their replacements the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) respectively.

    The notification was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice in exercise of the powers under Section 8 of the General Clauses Act 1897. As per Section 8 of the General Clauses Act, references to repealed provisions will be construed as references to the re-enacted provisions.

    The new criminal laws - BNS, BNSS and BSA - repealed and replaced the IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act with effect from July 1, 2024.
