    The Supreme Court will hear today applications to stay the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 and the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2024.

    A bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the matter. 237 writ petitions challenging the CAA, filed in 2019, have been listed before the bench.  They were last listed before the Court on October 31, 2022.

    On March 11, the Union Government notified the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2024 to implement the CAA and notified the formation of committees at the State/UT levels to process the applications. Following that, applications seeking to stay the Act and the Rules were filed.  Political party Indian Union Muslim League (IUML, the lead petitioner in the case), Democratic Youth Front of India (DYFI, youth wing of the CPI(M)), All Assam Students Union, Assam opposition leaders Debrabata Saika and Abdul Khaleque, State of Kerala, AIMIM head Asaduddin Owaisi, Socialist Democratic Party of India etc., are some of the applicants.

      CJI : They are entitled to say they need some time.

      Jaising : Is my friend making a statement that pending the hearing no one would be given citizenship? If he is making that statement, lot of time will be saved.

      SG : It does not take away citizenship of anyone. There is no prejudice caused to the petitioners. What is done is, those who have migrated...no new person is given, those who entered before 2014.

      SG : There are 237 petitions. 20 applications have been filed for stay. I need to file reply. I was seeking time. I need time to collate etc.
