Justice Shekhar Yadav Appears Before Supreme Court Collegium To Put Forth Stand Over Comments Made At VHP Event

Sources close to the Allahabad High Court and the Supreme Court told Live Law that the transcript of Justice Yadav's speech reached the Top Court last week, following its December 10 direction taking note of his speech and calling for the relevant details and particulars of the same from the High Court. Following this, Justice Yadav was asked to appear before the SC Collegium.

The purpose behind the meeting could be seen as an effort of the SC Collegium to satisfy the principles of natural justice, so that Justice Yadav could clarify his position before any action is considered by it.

The Collegium meeting was originally scheduled for last weekend, but it was postponed to today due to the unavailability of two of the five judges who are part of the Collegium.

Justice Yadav's speech has come under widespread criticism as being communal and derogatory towards the Muslim community. He said that the country would function as per the wishes of the majority and used the slur 'Kathmul**h' in his speech.

Yesterday, a PIL plea was moved before the Allahabad HC against an impeachment motion submitted to the Rajya Sabha Secretary General by 55 MPs seeking the impeachment of Justice Shekhar Yadav over the speech delivered by him at Prayagraj on December 8 at an event organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (Legal Cell)
