    The Central Government on Thursday (31st December) notified the appointment of Justice RS Chauhan, presently the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand.

    The Centre also notified the appointment of Justice Mohammad Rafiq, presently the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

    The Central Government has also notified the appointment of Justice Pankaj Mithal, as the Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court and the appointment of Justice Ravi R. Malimath, as the Judge of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

    It may be noted that Justice Dr. S. Muralidhar, presently a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been appointed the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. Also, Justice Hima Kohli, judge of Delhi High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court.

    Justice Sanjib Banjeree of Calcutta High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court following the retirement of former Chief Justice A P Sahi.

    Earlier in the day, the Centre notified the transfer of Chief Justice J K Maheshwari of Andhra Pradesh High Court as the Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court and Chief Justice AK Goswami of Sikkim High Court as the CJ of AP High Court.

    About Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan

    Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan was appointed as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court on June 23, 2019. He earlier took charge as the Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on April 3, 2019, after the transfer of the then Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan to the Calcutta High Court.

    He has been the Judge of Rajasthan High Court (which has been his parent high court), and also of the Karnataka High Court.

    Justice R. S. Chauhan is B.A., L.L.B. He was born on December 24, 1959. He started his career as an Advocate on November 13, 1983 in the Rajasthan High Court. His field of specialization is in criminal and service matters.

    He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on June 13, 2005 and was promoted to Permanent Judge on January 24.2008. He was later transferred to Karnataka High Court as a Judge on March 10, 2015.

    About Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq

    Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq was administered the oath of office of the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on 27th April 2020, on being transferred from the Meghalaya High Court.

    Mr. Justice Mohammad Rafiq was the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court from 13th November 2019 to 26th April 2020. Prior to his appointment as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, he served as a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court where he was elevated as Judge on May 15th, 2006.

    He was born on May 25th, 1960 at Sujangarh in Churu district of Rajasthan. He completed his B. Com in 1980, LL. B in 1984 and M. Com in 1986 from University of Rajasthan. He later joined the Bar and practiced as Advocate after enrolment with the Bar Council of Rajasthan on 8th July 1984.

    He Lordship also worked as Acting Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court twice; from April 7th, 2019 to May 4th, 2019 and from September 23rd, 2019 to October 5th, 2019.

    He was also the Executive Chairman of the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority and the Administrative Judge of the Rajasthan High Court prior to elevation as the Chief Justice.

    The Centre has also notified the transfer of following High Court Judges

    Justice Satish Chandra Sharma of Madhya Pradesh High Court to Karnataka High Court.

    Justice Joymalya Bagchi of Calcutta High Court to Andhra Pradesh High Court;

    The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 14th December,2020 recommended transfer of nine Judges/ Chief Justices to various High Courts.

    It has recommended to transfer:

    Chief Justice of Telangana High Court, Justice RS Chauhan to Uttarakhand High Court;

    Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Justice JK Maheshwari to Sikkim High Court;

    Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, Justice Mohammad Rafiq to Madhya Pradesh High Court;

    Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court, Justice AK Goswami to Andhra Pradesh High Court;

    Justice Sanjay Yadav of Madhya Pradesh High Court to Allahabad High Court;

    Justice Rajesh Bindal of Jammu & Kashmir High Court to Calcutta High Court;

    Justice Vineet Kothari of Madras High Court to Gujarat High Court;

    Justice Joymalya Bagchi of Calcutta High Court to Andhra Pradesh High Court;

    Justice Satish Chandra Sharma of Madhya Pradesh High Court to Karnataka High Court.
