SC Collegium Proposes To Appoint Justice Rajesh Bindal As Chief Justice Of Allahabad High Court -Read Statement

The Supreme Court Collegium has proposed to appoint Justice Rajesh Bindal as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court,
He is presently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
During his tenure as the ACJ, Justice Bindal was criticized by a fellow Judge over Roster management and purported violation of the Appellate Side Rules.
Besides, the Chairman of Bar Council of West Bengal had written to the Chief Justice of India, seeking removal of Justice Bindal as ACJ, citing his allegedly partial, unfair and biased approach. The move was however condemned by 4 Elected Members of the Bar Council, claiming that the Chairman acted of his own accord and his views do not represent the sentiments of the majority of the members of the Bar.
About Justice Bindal
Justice Bindal obtained his degree in law from the Kurukshetra University in 1985 and joined the profession in the Punjab & Haryana High Court. He represented the Chandigarh Administration before Central Administrative Tribunal for more than a decade till 2004.
He was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on March 22, 2006. He remained Chairman of the Committee constituted pursuant to Resolution No. 7 adopted in the Chief Justices' Conference, 2016 for framing Draft Rules for Electronic Evidence and submitted his report to the Supreme Court in November 2018.
During his tenure in Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Bindal disposed of around 80,000 cases. Before his transfer to the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, he was heading various Committees including Computer Committee, Arrears Committee.
On transfer to Jammu & Kashmir High Court, he took oath of office on 19th November 2018. The Central Government had, in December 2020, appointed him as an Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.
He took oath as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court in January 2021. He was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice with effect from April 29, 2021
