Former Supreme Court judge Justice Kuldip Singh, 92, passed away in Chandigarh yesterday evening.
He served as a judge of the Supreme Court for eight years from 14.12.1988 to 21.12.1996. He was known for his contributions to the field of environmental law, earning him the moniker 'the green judge'. For long, he presided over the bench which handled the MC Mehta case in which several orders were passed to deal with air pollution in Delhi. The MC Mehta bench also passed orders to protect the Taj Mahal from industrial pollution and restricted the activities in the Taj Trapezium zone.
After retirement, Justice Singh headed the Delimitation Commission in 2002 on the readjustment of territorial constituencies for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
He was born on 1st January 1932 in Jhelum in present-day Pakistan. He completed his legal education in England and was called as a Barrister-at-Law at the Lincoln Inn, London. He enrolled as an advocate in 1959. In 1987, he was appointed as the Advocate General of Punjab.
His cremation will take place in Chandigarh at 3 PM today.
