COVID 19 : SC Takes Suo Moto Notice Of Non-Supply Of Mid-Day Meals Due To School Shutdowns [Read Order]

Expressing concern over the non supply of midday meals to the children after shut down of schools due to Covid 19 outbreak, the Supreme Court Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde took suo mto cognisance and sought reply from, Union Health Ministry, all States and Union Territories (UT). Expressing concern over the non supply of midday meals to the children after shut down of schools due to Covid 19 outbreak, the Supreme Court Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde took suo mto cognisance and sought reply from, Union Health Ministry, all States and Union Territories (UT).
The bench,also comprising of justices G R Gavai and Surya Kant, appointed Sr Advocate Sanjay Hegde as Amicus Curiae in the case.
"We are concerned about the supply of midday meal because of shut down of schools due to Corona Virus. There is a problem, children are not able to get the mid-day meal..."CJI said.
He cited the example of state of Kerala, where the government is supplying the food to their houses.
"We want to know, what other states and UTs are doing?"
Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) A S Nadkarni accepted the notice on behalf of health ministry.
Seeking reply in a week, the bench issued notice to Chief Secretaries of the states and UTs.
