     Chief Justice of India Justice N. V. Ramana has expressed grief at the passing away of Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar, Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

    "I was hoping for his speedy and complete recovery and his return to the Bench at the earliest. The news of his passing has come as a rude shock. I have lost a valued colleague.In the last four years of my association with him in the Supreme Court, I have benefitted immensely from his amazing legal acumen" , newly sworn-in CJI Ramana said.

    The Chief Justice of India spoke to the son of Justice Shantanagoudar and offered condolences to the bereaved family on his own behalf and on behalf of the Brother and Sister Judges of the Supreme Court.

    Justice Ramana has shared the bench with Justice Shantanagoudar for a long time to deal with several important cases.

    It was on Saturday(April 24) night that Justice Shantanagoudar breathed his last at a private hospital in Gurugram, succumbing to prolonged illness.

    He was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2017 and had a term till May 5, 2023. Before elevation to the Supreme Court, Justice Shantanagoudar was the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court. His parent High Court was Karnataka High Court.

    Condoling Justice Shantanagoudar's death, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "The demise of Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar has caused deep sorrow. His sound contribution and caliber enabled him to serve as a judge at Karnataka & Kerala High Courts, & finally, the Supreme Court. He leaves behind a void in legal fraternity. My condolences to his family".


    Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also expressed his condolences.
