When a plea regarding the allotment of chambers for Supreme Court lawyers was mentioned for urgent listing, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said that the lawyers in Delhi should consider themselves fortunate to get chambers as nowhere else lawyers are given chambers.
The CJI also recalled his days as a lawyer and said "we used to stand under trees, you are fortunate to get chambers".
The chambers for the Supreme Court advocates are allotted by a committee constituted by the Chief Justice of India and the allotment has to be approved by the CJI. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court's administrative branch published a list of 468 lawyers who are allotted chambers.
"I'm not talking as CJI. I am talking in the welfare of lawyers. With great difficulty something has happened.Don't expect palatial chambers. Getting a place to sit itself is a big favour. Nowhere in the country except Delhi you get chambers. We used to stand under the tree. You are fortunate. You got chambers", the CJI said,
The CJI said that three judges of the allotment committee spent a lot of time in finalising the list of allottees(Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant and JK Maheswhari are the members of the committee). "Now about 400-500 people are getting benefit. You want to stall that?", CJI asked the counsel.
The CJI ultimately agreed to list the matter before a bench next week
The chamber allotment is done as per Supreme Court Lawyers Chambers (Allotment and Occupancy) Rules.
