The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud today (September 19) urged lawyers to refer to the revised digital Supreme Court Reporter (SCR) for case citations and reference to judgements.
The CJI during a hearing of a matter relating to airport tariffs, encouraged the advocates appearing to use the updated online SCR portal. He stressed that while for a long time the SCR was lagging but has now been adequately updated to ensure that reports with headnotes are published as soon as a judgment is uploaded.
"Now you must give SCR citations! Because SCR is now officially up to date, please use SCR...please Google it. It's digital, free, accurate and the official reporter ....it also has neutral citations."
He said that almost 20 young lawyers are working in the research and planning cell to prepare the headnotes for the SCR reports. He described them as "talented and hardworking."
He also spoke about the efforts made to translate judgments to regional languages.
"37,000 judgements since independence are translated into Hindi....Tamil is also leading now. Every language recognized by the constitution, judgements are being translated in. All our judgements now have neutral citations. SCR was way behind schedule, that's why we made a mechanism that the moment judgement is delivered, it is uploaded with headnotes."
CJI Chandrachud launched the E-SCR and neutral citation projects last year.
