Chargesheet Filed Against One Accused In RG Kar Rape-Murder Case, CBI Tells Supreme Court

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Supreme Court in a status report that it has filed chargesheet against one accused named Sanjay Roy for the offences of rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata.
As per the status report, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sealdah has taken cognizance of the chargesheet filed on October 7 for offences punishable under Sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the BNS, 2023 and committed the matter to the Additional Sessions Court-I, Sealdah. The matter is posted next on November 4 for hearing on charges. The CBI further stated in its status report that the investigation into the alleged role of others in relation to the rape-murder is a subject matter of continuing investigation.
Sanjay Roy was the accused arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10 for the crime which took place on August 9, before the investigation was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court on August 13.
The CBI also informed the Supreme Court that its investigation in a separate case regarding alleged financial irregularities in the RG Kar Hospital is in progress. The central agency's status report was examined by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra which is hearing the suo motu case taken over the crime.
The CBI said that it is examining the communications received from parties appearing in the suo motu case highlighting certain aspects
The bench directed that the CBI should apprise the Court of the further developments in the cases by filing another status report in three weeks.
