Centre Increases Lifetime Monthly Payment Of Retired Supreme Court Judges

The Ministry of Law and Justice has notified an amendment to the Supreme Court Judges Rules 1959 to increase the lifetime monthly payment to the retired judges of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice of India.
As per Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges Rules, a retired CJI is entitled during his lifetime to a payment of rupees twenty five thousand per month for defraying the services of an orderly, driver and security guard, for meeting the expenses incurred towards secretarial assistance on contract basis and for maintenance of an office-cum-residence. This amount has been now increased to Rupees Seventy Thousand per month, as per the Supreme Court Judges(Amendment) Rules 2021 notified on Thursday(March 18).
Likewise, a retired Supreme Court judge was earlier entitled to a lifetime monthly payment of Rupees Fourteen Thousand for defraying the services of an orderly, driver and security guard, for meeting the expenses incurred towards secretarial assistance on contract basis and for maintenance of an office-cum-residence. This lifetime payment has been hiked to Rupees Thirty Nine Thousand per month.
The Rule was last amended in 2006.
