The Calcutta High Court has recently lifted a restraint imposed on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from making any statements against Governor CV Ananda Bose who had sued her for defamation due to the CM's claim that women had told her they were afraid to visit the Raj Bhavan amid recent claims of sexual harassment against the governor.

The CM had approached the Calcutta High Court in appeal after a single bench had restrained her from making any statements against the governor which may be construed as defamatory in nature.

A division bench of Justices IP Mukherji and Biswaroop Chowdhury upon perusing the CM's appeal held that she had all the right to make statements against the Governor as long as they were not defamatory in nature.

It thus modified the order of the single-bench which had earlier prevented her from making any statements against the governor.

The appeal has now been listed for further hearing at a later date.

Case: SHUSHRI MAMATA BANERJEE VERSUS DR. C.V.ANANDA BOSE AND ORS.

Case No: CS 168 of 2024
