The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition seeking directions for country-wide ban on the deadly online game Blue Whale Challenge after several incidents of young children committing suicide due to the game have come to light.

Filing a PIL through advocate Jaya Sukin, Madurai-based advocate N S Ponnaiah said the game is gaining popularity through Facebook, Google, WhatsApp, Instragram, Microsoft and Yahoo.

Advocate Sukin mentioned this before the bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, which agreed to hear the petition soon.

The petitioner cited that around 200 people had committed suicide in India by playing the online game.

"There is need to immediately ban and make awareness about online Blue Whale game amongst the people, especially youngsters of our society," the petition stated.

But till date, the government has not taken any step to check the dangerous game. The number of people committing suicide due to it is increasing day by day, the petitioner said.
