The Centre informed the Supreme Court that all prisons in Delhi have installed e-kiosks for prisoners to know their case particulars including the status of their court case and their period of incarceration.

This e-prison/court module is developed by the National Informatics Centre and the Court can also access it.

While considering a criminal appeal, the bench headed by CJI NV Ramana had directed the Additional Solicitor General to file an affidavit about the possibility of the creation of a portal for inmates, as also their counsel, which could be used by them to access details about the period of incarceration suffered by them.

Recording this submission, the Court posted the case after four weeks for hearing on this issue.

The court was considering a criminal appeal filed by a man convicted under Sections 302 and 498A for murder of his wife. Referring to evidence on record, the bench upheld the conviction.

In another matter, CJI had said that the Supreme Court is thinking of evolving a system to electronically transmit bail orders directly to prisons so that prison authorities will not delay the release of prisoners awaiting certified copy of the order. ""We are in times of use of technology. We are under contemplation of a scheme called FASTER : Fast and Secure Transmission of Electronic Record. It is meant to communicate all orders to concerned jail authorities without waiting", the CJI had said.
