26,43,437 Traffic Challan And Petty Cases Settled By Lok Adalat Organised By WB State Legal Services Authority

The State Legal Services Authority, West Bengal had recently organised the National Lok Adalat on July 24 wherein a substantial number of disputes had been settled amicably. A noteworthy number of 26,43,437 traffic challan and petty cases have been disposed of by the District Courts throughout the State over the last three months.
A total number of 207 Lok Adalat Benches had been constituted throughout the State and nearly 40,442 pre-litigation cases had been taken up out of which 8,745 matters were amicably settled. Furthermore, out of 32,980 cases pending before different Courts, 23,067 cases were amicably settled amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The settlement amount recovered was Rs.99,53,17,762.
Raju Mukherjee, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, West Bengal stated that Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal who is also the Patron-in-Chief & Executive Chairman of State Legal Services Authority, West Bengal had emphasised on the need to refer more pending cases before the upcoming National Lok Adalat that is slated to take place on September 11, 2021. Settlement through Lok Adalats will go a long way in reducing the already overburdened Courts when they are unable to function normally owing to the on-going pandemic situation, the Acting Chief Justice had observed.
