Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani Nominated to Rajya Sabha

Following the demise of one nominated member of Rajyasabha, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani has been appointed as a nominated RS member by the President, Ram Nath Kovind under Article 80 of the Constitution of India.

Mr. Jethmalani is a Senior Advocate, who completed his Bachelor of Arts from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and his Master of Arts from Oxford University. He then studied law in London under the aegis of the UK Bar and qualified as a barrister in 1980.

He enrolled at the bar on 12th February 1981. Mr. Mahesh Jethmalani's 40-year long illustrious career at the bar includes several high profile criminal and civil cases, including but not limited to:

• The trial and appeals of Ex. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. A.R. Antulay
• The appeals in High Court and Supreme Court of 2 accused in Mrs. Indira Gandhi's assassination case.
• Conducted the defence of Yadvender Singh in the General Vaidya assassination case before the Special Judge under TADA, seated in a court situated within the precincts of the Yerwada Jail, Pune in which the accused was acquitted.
• Appeared for Sanjay Dutt and certain other bomb blast accused in bail application before the TADA Judge in High Court and appeal in Supreme Court.
• Conducted the Harshad Mehta trial in the UCO Bank case before the Special Judge – Hon'ble Justice Shri S.N. Variava in the Bombay High Court.
• Conducted the defence of Harshad Mehta and others in 'the Maruti Udyog Case before the Special Judge – Hon'ble Justice Shri M.S. Rane in the Bombay High Court, and the appeal in Supreme Court
• Represented Ketan Parekh in the Scam case of 2001.
• Represented M/s. Tata Tea Ltd. . for Bail in the ULFA Case. Appeared for the Birla family in the case against Mr. Lodha in the Supreme Court.
• Appeared for Shri Anil Ambani in Natural Gas distribution contract against Mukesh Ambani.
• Counsel for Sadhavi Pragya in the Malegaon Bomb blast case.
• Successfully appeared for Shri L.K. Advani in the electoral offence case in Gwalior.
• Represented Shri. Modi (then Chief Minister) in the Gujarat Riot Cases in Supreme Court.
• Represented Shri. Amit Shah, (Former Home Minister of Gujarat) in the Sohrabuddin Murder Case, and the Tulsidas Prajapati Case in the Gujarat High Court and the Supreme Court.
• Appeared in several Legal Aid and Public Interest Litigation Matters.
• Appeared in Several Arbitration proceedings- India and International He has also recently been appointed on the 5-member "Committee for Reforms in Criminal Laws" under the aegis of the Ministry of Home Affairs, India.

He contested Lok Sabha elections in 2009 from the Mumbai North Central Constituency as a BJP-Shiv Sena candidate in 2009 but lost. In 2012 Jethmalani resigned from the BJP's national executive committee over the re-election of party president Nitin Gadkari.
