The Saket Bar Association has written to the Chief Justice of India N.V Ramana seeking exemption of payment of Toll Tax by Advocates as they are 'officers of the Court" and are engaged in pursuing public services at large.
In a letter dated August 21, 2021 addressed to the Chief Justice of India, President Karnail Singh and Secretary Dhir Singh Kasana submitted that the community of lawyers have been badly hit financially due to the ongoing pandemic as a result of which it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to pay toll tax while moving across the country in pursuance of professional engagements.
"This is respectfully submitted that Advocate community is doing great service for society at large and providing the public a right path for achieving the social justice and this designated as officers of the court. Advocates are part and parcel of legal judicial system which is helping judiciary in imparting justice at large and thus be provided exemption from Toll tax throughout India. Considering their important role in development of country", the letter stated.
Thus, the Bar Association requested the Chief Justice of India to pass a direction to this effect to the concerned authorities for ensuring exemption from paying toll tax by lawyers.
