Punjab & Haryana High Court Grants Protection To Muslim Woman Who Converted To Hinduism To Marry Hindu Man

The bench of Justice Gurvinder Singh Gill was hearing the plea filed by one Rajina @ Jyoti and her husband Jaspal Sharma.

Fearing threat at the hands of private respondents, as the couple got married the wishes of their families, they had moved the court seeking issuance of a direction to official respondents to protect their lives and liberty.

Therefore, without commenting as regards the veracity of the averments made in their petition and also as regards the validity of alleged marriage of the petitioners, the petition was disposed of with a direction to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Sangrur, District Sangrur, Punjab to look into the matter and to dispose of their representation in accordance with the law.

"In case, it is found that there is a genuine threat to the lives and liberty of the petitioners, then necessary steps warranted under law be taken thereupon at the earliest so as to ensure that no harm is caused to the petitioners," added the Court.

In related news, the Delhi High Court on Monday extended till July 22 the interim protection granted to a Hindu woman who converted to Islam and sought protection while claiming that she was facing an extreme threat to her life and that of her immediate family members who are allegedly being witch-hunted by the officials of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Last week, the Delhi High Court had granted police protection to a Hindu Girl who alleged that certain media houses are harassing her by airing programmes against her, for wanting to convert to Islam.

Justice Subramonium Prasad directed SHO, Jamia Nagar to ensure that adequate police protection is given to the girl till the next date of hearing i.e. 26th July.
