Project 39A Moves From NLU Delhi To NALSAR; To Be Known As 'The Square Circle Clinic'

After more than a decade, all members of Project 39A will be moving out of National Law University Delhi. From 31st March 2025, we they will start their work  at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad as The Square Circle Clinic. They will have offices in Delhi, Hyderabad, Nagpur, and Pune.

The Square Circle Clinic is planning to expand our leading work in the criminal justice space and the diverse body of work we have built, including:

• Mental health and incarceration

• Forensics and sentencing

• Legal aid and capital punishment

• Custodial violence and prison art education

• Storytelling initiatives in the justice system

The work of Project 39A n the Supreme Court and various High Courts, providing pro bono representation to death row prisoners, has resulted in 26 acquittals and 50 commutations. In collaboration with the District Legal Services Authorities, their representation of undertrials incarcerated in Pune and Nagpur Central Prisons has led to the release of 1,625 individuals.

• Parliamentary debates in the Lok Sabha

• Reports of the UN Secretary-General and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Their work has received formal recognition from:

• The World Psychiatric Association

• The New York Legal Aid Society

• The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty
