The Delhi Government has informed the High Court that the Police Commissioner is personally monitoring the registration of FIRs regarding misbehaviour and harassment of women in the national capital.
A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad was also informed by the government that whenever any instance of misbehaviour on woman is brought to the notice of the Delhi Police, FIR is registered promptly in the matter.
The court disposed of a public interest litigation seeking direction for ensuring that all DTC buses and other public transport buses in the national capital are installed with CCTV cameras and other security features.
The plea also sought setting up of a court monitored committee for review of the safety and security features in public transport. It also sought SIT or CBI enquiry into the incidents of non-registration of FIRs by the police upon a cognizable offence being reported to them.
In the status report filed by the respondent authorities, the court was informed that CCTV cameras have already been fitted in DTC buses plying in the national capital. It further said GPS system has also been installed and marshals have also been posted in such buses.
The court was informed that the process of fitting CCTV cameras in the cluster buses is underway. Delhi Government assured the court that the process shall be completed as expeditiously as possible.
“In light of the detailed and exhaustive reply and steps taken by the State Government, this Court is of the opinion that no further orders are called for in the present PIL. The same is, accordingly, disposed of,” the court ordered.
