Minor Girl Allegedly Dies By Suicide In Govt Shelter Home: Allahabad High Court Seeks Details On Letter Plea Seeking CBI probe

The Bench of Acting Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice Rajendra Kumar-IV was dealing with a letter petition seeking CBI probe into this matter, and the same has now been registered as a public interest litigation petition.

The letter petition by Swadesh & Prayag legal Aid Clinic society and 4 other filed through Advocate Gaurav, had brought to the notice of the court the alleged custodial death of the minor girl.

The Nari Niketan has claimed that the Girl committed suicide on August 7, 2021 by hanging herself at Nari Niketan.

The bench has also directed the petitioner to provide a copy of the letter petition to the government advocate and in the meantime, the authorities have been directed to seek instructions into the matter.

The letter petition averred that in the year 2017, the deceased girl left her home and ran away with a boy of another caste.

Thereafter, her father lodged an FIR against the said incident, pursuant to which, police recovered her and produced before the concerned Magistrate where the deceased girl showed her willingness to reside with the boy (with whom she ran away).

However, looking at the age of the girl, the Magistrate had sent her to the said Shelter Home (Nari Niketan).

The plea further states that District Probation Officer is the appropriate authority who is responsible for the affairs, arrangements and securities of Shelter Home (Nari Niketan), Khuldabaad working under the supervision of DM, Prayagraj.

It has also been stated that a full-time lady police officer is posted at Shelter Home (Nari Niketan) for the purpose of maintaining law and order and for the protection of females who are residing at Shelter Home (Nari Niketan) and CCTV Cameras are also installed in the premises of Shelter Home and yet this incident took place and therefore, an inquiry has been demanded in the plea.

The matter will now be heard on September 3.
