The Delhi High Court has sought response of the city police on the functional status of 1941 CCTV cameras already installed in 197 police stations.

Justice Yashwant Varma also asked the Delhi Police to provide a break-up of the number of cameras that already stand installed in each police station.

The Court was dealing with a plea seeking direction to the Delhi Police and the Delhi Government to ensure that CCTV cameras installed in police stations are functional.

As per the status report filed by the Delhi Police, it was stated that 1941 cameras were installed in 197 police stations in the city and that 2175 additional CCTV cameras are required to be installed further.

The status report also stated that for the purposes of installing additional CCTV cameras, the Delhi Police has obtained the administrative approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is presently in the process of sourcing the same.

Taking note of the status report, the Court ordered thus:

"Notwithstanding the disclosures noticed above, the respondents would have to still explain the functional status of the CCTV cameras which have already been installed as well as providing a break-up of the number of cameras that stand installed in each police station."

The Court has directed the city police to file a further status report in the matter, while adding that the same shall address further progress that may be made with respect to the installation of the additional 2175 CCTV cameras.

The matter will now be heard on January 12, 2023.

The petition has been filed by one Chandril Dabas through Advocate Manan Agarwal.
