Gujarat HC Achieves Case Clearance Rate Of About 74% In July 2020; Records Surge In E-Filing [Read Press Note]

Case Clearance Rate for the month of July, 2020 stands at 73.77%.
The Gujarat High Court has recorded a significant rise in its electronic filing traffic. As per a press release issued by the High Court, over 5,000 cases, both civil and criminal, were filed before it in the month of July, 2020, through exclusive email addresses notified for accepting the soft copies of the matters.
In all, 2178 Civil and 3054 Criminal cases (including the Interim Applications) came to be filed. Of these, 3481 matters were registered barring the matters where the objections raised during the scrutiny of the matters are yet to be cleared by the filing party side.
During the 20 functioning days in the month, 261 Single Judge Benches and 52 Division Benches conducted the matters from the residences, through Video Conferencing. They heard a total of 9408 cases and disposed of over 3100 cases, including 566 Interim Applications.
Total number of 50 Judgments came to be delivered during the month of which, 31 were Single Judge Bench Judgments and 19 were Division Bench judgments. Further, total of 7364 Orders were passed by these Benches.
Accordingly, Case Clearance Rate for the month of July, 2020 stands at 73.77%.
Other case statistics released by the Court for the month of July, 2020 include the following:
Online Mentioning:
An Online Mentioning Platform was launched on June 8, 2020. During the month July, total 1007 matters [665 Civil and 342 Criminal] came to be mentioned through this Online Platform which allowed Advocates to place request for mentioning based on a OTP sent on their registered mobile numbers.
Disposal of Matters:
Total 3128 cases (including 566 Interim Applications) came to be disposed of during the month of July, 2020. Of the 2562 main matters disposed of during the month, 763 were Civil and 1799 were Criminal matters. Thus in the disposal of main cases, component of Civil cases was 29.78% including the preventive detention matters.
Pre-lockdown Matters:
3128 matters disposed (including Interim Applications), 605 matters were such which were filed/ registered before the current lockdown situation and came to be disposed in the month of July.
"These figures very well reflect the fact that during the online VC mode of functioning of the High Court, the matters already instituted before lockdown situation are also taken care of, heard and decided," the press release states.
Online Awareness Session for Ld. Advocates:
Two separate batches of Online Awareness Session for Advocates practising in the High Court were organized on 30th and 31st July, 2020. 39 and 33 Advocates participated in these two Batches respectively and more of such online awareness sessions are slated to be organized in the month of August, 2020.
