Delhi Riots: Court Grants Custody Parole To AIMIM Candidate Shifa Ur Rehman To Contest Assembly Elections

A Delhi Court on Wednesday granted custody parole to Shifa-ur-Rehman, accused in the UAPA case connected to the 2020 North East Delhi riots, for contesting the upcoming Delhi Legislative Assembly polls.
Rehman is a candidate of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party and is contesting from Okhla constituency.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Courts directed that Rehman be released in police protection in the day time, as per the timings prescribed in the Jail Manual, from January 30 till February 03 for 12 hours.
“Accordingly, considering the overall facts and circumstances, and the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court in Petition for Special Leave to Appeal No. 856/2025 dated 28.01.2025, it is ordered that the applicant is granted custody parole…,” the Court said.
Rehman sought interim bail for a period of four weeks for canvassing and voting in the election.
It was submitted that earlier, he was granted interim bail on two occasions and he never misused the liberty and surrendered himself on time.
Granting custody parole, the Court allowed Rehman to visit his party office and also attend the meetings etc. within his constituency.
The Court further said that Rehman accused may sign necessary documents and meet his counsel and campaign Managers during the period of custody parole.
“The applicant/accused shall not make any comments on his pending cases in his speech/campaign or any Press Conference,” the judge said.
FIR 59 of 2020 was registered by Delhi Police's Special Cell under various offences under the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The accused in the case are Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan and Natasha Narwal.
