The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear today the plea challenging the demolition drive started by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation against alleged encroachers in the Jahangirpuri area, where riots broke out last week.

The Division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla allowed the urgent listing, after a mentioning made by Advocates Shahrukh Alam and Ajit Pujari. It directed that the plea, yet to be filed, will be listed today.

"We are directing listing today. Mr. Sharma, you should be ready with complete instructions by then. We will not grant any time," Justice Sanghi told Additional Solicitor General Chetan Shrama.

Significantly, the matter was also mentioned before the Supreme Court today, which has ordered status quo on the demolition drive. The CJI directed the listing of the matter tomorrow.

Before the High Court, Alam had sought a stay on the demolition drive until 2 pm, when the matter is likely to be heard.

"Demolition has started. Some residents are not even in the area due to violence. Others in custody. Look at the notices. No sections mentioned, it's not mentioned which houses will be demolished. Please grant us protection till 2 pm. We will file it today," she said.

ASG Sharma opposed the mentioning, stating that the Supreme Court's attention has already been drawn to the matter.

"There is a simultaneous mentioning before the Supreme Court on the same issue. You can't have it everywhere," he said.

Whereas the High Court refused to stop the drive, it made it clear that no further time will be granted to the Respondents and they must be ready with relevant documents and notifications when the matter is taken up.
