The Delhi High Court has stayed until Jan 22 the notice served to Kathak exponent Pt. Birju Maharaj cancelling the allotment of government accommodation to him.
The artist who is a Padma Vibhushan awardee was seemingly allotted a government accommodation owing to his accomplishments, however, vide notices served on Oct 9 and Dec 23 this year the allotment has been cancelled and he has been asked to vacate the premises by Dec 31.
Appearing for Maharaj, Sr. Adv. Akhil Sibal said that similar notices were issued to other artists as well who had been allotted Government accommodations. These notices are subject matter of petitions filed before the Delhi High Court itself, he submitted.
Referring to the order dated 23.12.2020 passed by the Delhi High Court in Court W.P. (C) 10991/2020 Bharati Shivaji & Ors. v Union of India Through Ministry of Culture & Anr. whereby the notice dated 09.10.2020, similar to the notice in the present case, had been stayed, Sibal prayed that the notice to Maharaj may be stayed as well.
The court granted Sibal relief on the above grounds and listed the petition for further hearing on Jan 22, along with the case cited by Sibal.
