Centre has notified appointment of Cheekati Manavendranath Roy and Matam Venkata Ramana as judges of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Notification from the Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India reads that President (in exercise of powers conferred by Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India) is pleased to confirm their appointment as judges of the A.P High Court in order of seniority.

Their names were recommended for High Court on April 15, 2019 by Supreme Court Collegium. Collegium had considered whole material on record before recommendation.

Earlier Chief Justice of common High Court for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had recommended their names for elevation in September 2018.

Some recommendations of judicial officers are still pending with SC Collegium and have not been cleared yet.

Notification is significant considering the recent statement by Law Ministry in which it said that it was an important stake holder in judicial appointments, and will not act as mere "post office" forwarding collegium recommendations.

Ravi Shankar Prasad after assuming charge as Law Minister had said in a statement to media that he would like to say with great humility that as a Law Minister, he will not be a post office and that the Law Minister and the Law Ministry will have a role as a stake holder [in judicial appointments] and that they will give due respect to the collegium system.

"We will try to fast-track judicial appointments, obviously with the consultation of the Honourable Supreme Court. We will work as a team," he had said.
