    The second National Lok Adalat for 2024 was organised on June 22nd across Gujarat under the aegis of the National Legal Service Authority (NALSA).

    The Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court and Patron-in-Chief of the Gujarat State Legal Service Authority, Justice Sunita Agarwal, along with Senior Most Judge of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Biren A. Vaishnav, provided detailed guidance to all District Legal Service Authorities and Taluka Legal Service Committees to ensure maximum benefit for the parties involved.

    A total of 4,37,140 cases pending in categories such as Motor Accident Compensation cases, Civil Suits, Negotiable Instrument Act Cheque return Complaints, Matrimonial Disputes, Industrial Disputes, and others were taken up for settlement during the Lok Adalat. Out of these, 2,51,712 cases were successfully disposed of, with awards totalling Rs. 12,67,70,07,307.

    Pre-litigation Lok Adalats also saw substantial activity, with 3,23,450 pre-litigation cases settled for a settlement amount of Rs. 72,517,8,256.7. Additionally, 2,85,733 Traffic E-Challan cases were settled, resulting in a settlement amount of Rs. 15,44,00,935.

    The Lok Adalat effectively resolved 3,376 matrimonial disputes pending in courts across the state, with Surat District recording the highest number of disposed cases. A notable success was witnessed at the Gandhinagar District Court, where a significant Motor Accident Claims Petition was amicably settled.

    In this case, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company agreed to pay a substantial settlement amount of Rs. 1,10,00,000 to the applicant. The case involved a serious motor vehicle accident resulting in significant injuries and damages.

    The settlement was finalized on June 22nd in the presence of the legal representatives of both parties and the Lok Adalat judges. The agreed amount will provide significant relief to the applicant, covering medical expenses, loss of income, and other damages sustained in the accident.

    R. A. Trivedi, Member Secretary (Principal District & Sessions Judge) of the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority, highlighted the successful resolution of the MACP Case as an encouraging example for similar cases pending in various courts.
