The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the state government to take all possible steps for the health of workers working in the coal-fired thermal power plants (CFTPPs) in future.
The court’s directive came after the state government submitted a report stating no worker in thermal power plants is suffering from any occupational disease. The team of the state officials conducted random surprise visits to the thermal power plants and filed their report in this regard.
The government submitted the report in response to the writ petition registered suo motu by the high court on basis of the Supreme Court order of January 31, 2014.
The Supreme Court issued order on the petition of Occupational Health and Safety Association vs. Union of India & Ors in this regard.
The Supreme Court directed the high courts of 18 states, where CFTPPs are functioning, including Madhya Pradesh, to examine the health issue of workers by calling reports.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla disposed of the petition with direction to the state to take all possible steps for the health of workers working in the thermal power plants in future as well.
