About the NLUD:

The National Law University Delhi is among India’s leading law universities, ranked second in the National Institutional Ranking Framework for the last two years. (Hons.) and one-year LL.M. program, along with diplomas, certificate courses and professional programs for both legal and non-legal professionals. About the NLUD Pro-Bono Club:

The NLUD Pro bono club is constituted to strengthen the Nyaya Bandhu (Pro Bono Legal Services) program which is an initiative under the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice. The Nyaya Bandhu (Pro Bono Legal Services) is the Government of India’s primary initiative to establish a framework for the dispensation of pro bono legal services across the country. The Pro Bono Club (PB club) Scheme, has been conceptualized to strengthen the existing pro bono programme, by integrating law schools and students within its fold. The primary objective of this scheme is to improve the efficiency and quality of pro bono legal services by providing assistance to pro bono advocates through competent law students. The NLUD pro-Bono Club has been established to provide assistance to pro bono advocates and practical exposure to law students. The objectives of the NLUD Pro Bobo Club are:

i. To improve efficiency and quality of pro bono legal services by providing assistance to pro bono advocates through law students

ii. To instil in young legal minds their responsibility to the community by understanding and practising pro bono legal services for the unassisted and disadvantaged persons in the societies.

To achieve the above-stated objectives the pro bono club undertakes a series of activities. Conducting training for law teachers for promoting justice education and legal awareness is one such activity.

About the Course Instructor:

Professor David McQuoid-Mason is a Professor of Law based at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban; and an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa; President of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association; Visiting Professor of Law, Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland; Adjunct Professor of Law, Griffiths University, Brisbane, Australia.

Professor McQuoid-Mason is the founder of the South African Street Law programme; co-founder of the Democracy for All programme; a former President of AULAI; former Director of the Practical Training Course for Candidate Attorneys in Durban; former Chairperson of the Durban Chapter of Lawyers for Human Rights; past President of the Society Teachers of Law of Southern African; former member of the Legal Aid Board; member of the South African Human Rights Commission, Committee on Access to Justice; member of the Ethics and Human Rights Committee of the Health Professions Council of South Africa; and a member of the Steering Committee of the Global Alliance for Justice Education.

He is a Fellow of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and was formerly Dean of the Howard College Law School, University of Natal, for 13 years. He began teaching law in 1971. He specializes in Medical Law, Access to Justice, Legal Aid and Clinical Legal Education. He is Chairperson of the Institute for Professional Legal Training and Street Law South Africa, and Acting Director of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Professor McQuoid-Mason established the first law clinic at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1973, and the first Street Law legal literacy programme in South Africa in 1986.

He has visited more than 129 countries and has facilitated numerous training, curriculum and materials development workshops on Street Law, Human Rights and Democracy in a variety of countries.

He has written two books, co-authored 18 books on aspects of human rights, law and democracy; and medical law and ethics. He has helped to set up Street law programs in over 45 countries. He has contributed more than 60 chapters to books, and delivered over 300 papers at national and international conferences. He has been honored by UNESCO for his work in human rights education, and has been awarded DCL degrees (honoris causa) by the Universities of Windsor, Canada and North Umbria, England, for his access to justice and clinical legal education work around the world.

Workshop outcomes:

• Be able to describe what is meant by street law and how it can be used to teach and learn about law and human rights

• Appreciate the importance of using interactive teaching and learning methods when teaching and learning about law and human rights

• Prepare a street law lesson

• Teach a street law lesson

Certificate: All participants will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion of the workshop.

Course Fee: Rs.2,000/- (Rupees Two Thousand Only) for teachers.

Rs. 500/-( Rupees Five Hundred Only) for students
