BHU Conducted A Comprehensive Workshop On The Dynamics Of Competition Law, Regulatory Framework & Practical Aspects

    Faculty Of Law, Banaras Hindu University(BHU) in collaboration with the Competition Commission Of India & Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas successfully conducted a comprehensive 1-day workshop on December 1, 2023. The event aimed to provide participants with insights into the evolution of Competition Law in India along with an overview of the Competition Act, of 2002.

    Prof. C.P. Upadhyay, Head and Dean of the Faculty, gave a brief introduction of the esteemed guests and speakers. Dr. Surendra Mehra, Assistant Professor of the Faculty, gave a brief introduction to the theme and what is meant by Competition law. His presentation made very clear among the attendees the difference between the Consumer Protection Act and the Competition Act. The Workshop moved on with the Address by the Chief Guest, Prof. S.K. Dubey, Director of the Institute of Management Studies at BHU, where in a very friendly manner he discussed the Aims and aspects of the Competition Law. He also highlighted the importance of the Framework by citing the recent takeovers by China in the last few years from all over the world and how the Indian Government tackled it.

    The whole Workshop was divided into 2 technical Sessions with a Refreshment break between the two. Technical Session-1 was conducted by Guest of Honour, Dr. K.D. Singh, Director(Law) at the Competition Commission of India, made the attendees acquaintance with how Competition law benefits the consumers and what's the role of CCI in this. He also dealt with the structure & composition, objective, functions, nature of proceedings before CCI, Powers, etc of CCI along with Case Laws and illustrations. Technical Session-2 was conducted by Distinguish Guest, Mr. Vijay Pratap Singh Chauhan, Partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. He provided an introduction to the Indian Merger Control Regime rather than going with the complexities. The seminar ended with a Vote of Thanks given by Dr. Ajay kr Barnawal, Assistant Professor of the faculty followed by the National Anthem and Certificate Distribution.

    By the end of the day, participants gained valuable insights into the intricacies of competition law, equipped with practical knowledge to navigate its complexities. The event's success was marked not only by the wealth of information shared but also by the engagement and enthusiasm of the participants, reflecting the Faculty's commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of contemporary legal issues.
