    Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) organised a One-Day Awareness and Sensitization Programme on Government Policies, Programmes, and Schemes for the Welfare of Senior Citizens. The event aimed to enhance understanding and awareness of the various initiatives implemented by the government to support the elderly. The programme's primary objectives were to disseminate knowledge on legal rights and welfare schemes available for senior citizens, provide a platform for interactive discussions among legal experts, policymakers, and students, and encourage social responsibility towards the welfare of the elderly.

    The event was organised with the dedicated efforts of the faculty and student organising committee, ensuring its seamless execution. It commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Registrar, HNLU, followed by Dr. Uttam Kumar Panda, the Programme Convenor. They highlighted the significance of legal advocacy and the university's role in fostering awareness and promoting social welfare. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Archana Kaushik from the School of Social Work, University of Delhi, provided an in-depth overview of government policies and programmes for senior citizens in India and beyond. She emphasised the need for holistic and inclusive policies that address the challenges faced by the elderly, ranging from healthcare and financial insecurity to social isolation.

    The programme comprised two significant technical sessions. The first session, titled "Overview of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act, 2007," was delivered by Ms. Tanya Sengupta, Research Officer at the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, and moderated by Mr. Kamal Narayan, Assistant Professor at HNLU. Ms. Sengupta discussed the legislative framework of the MWPSC Act, highlighting its provisions related to maintenance, protection against neglect and abuse, and the establishment of tribunals for senior citizens. She also elaborated on the importance of sensitising families and communities to create a supportive environment for the elderly.

    A Health Camp was organised for senior citizens following the first session, offering free medical check-ups and consultations. The camp was facilitated by qualified healthcare professionals, ensuring access to essential health services and promoting the importance of preventive healthcare. The second session focused on "Social and Financial Security Schemes for Senior Citizens in the State," with Mr. Kamal Singh Bhadauria, Assistant Director at the Directorate of Social Welfare, Raipur, as the speaker. Dr. Kamal Narayan, Assistant Professor at HNLU, moderated the session. Mr. Bhadauria provided a comprehensive overview of various social welfare schemes available at the state level, including old-age pensions, healthcare facilities, and housing support. He further emphasised the role of local government bodies and NGOs in effectively implementing these schemes. Participants were encouraged to raise questions, leading to a constructive dialogue on the gaps in service delivery and possible solutions. Both sessions concluded with interactive Q&A segments, where participants engaged in meaningful discussions, seeking clarity on the applicability and effectiveness of various policies. The sessions also facilitated the exchange of practical insights and suggestions for further policy enhancement.

    The valedictory session featured addresses by prominent dignitaries, including Prof. (Dr.) Vishnu Konoorayar, Professor of Law at HNLU, Prof. (Dr.) Yogendra Kumar Srivastava, Dean of PG Studies at HNLU, and Mr. Dharmendra Kumar Sahu, Deputy Director at the State Resource Centre, Social Welfare Department, Raipur. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Uttam Kumar Panda. HNLU's successful execution of this awareness and sensitisation programme reflects its dedication to social responsibility and legal advocacy. By fostering meaningful dialogue and raising awareness, the event underscored the importance of upholding the dignity and rights of senior citizens. The event's success was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the faculty and student organising committee, whose contributions ensured its smooth and effective execution.
