    NLSIU was the first National Law University established in India in 1986. The premier law school was set up with a mission to pioneer legal education reforms and to anchor the transformation of the Indian legal system through research and policy interventions. Consequently, the NLSIU was one of the first institutions in the country to introduce the five-year integrated law degree at the undergraduate level with the commencement of the first batch in 1988.

    For over 30 years now, the University has irrefutably remained a leader in the field of legal education in the country. This long-standing record has been possible due to the strong collaborations between legal academics, the Bar, the Bench, and the State Government of Karnataka.

    Admissions To NLSIU's Degree Programmes

    NLSIU announces admission to the B.A., LL.B (Hons.), LL.B (Hons.), LLM, MPP, and Ph.D. programs for students applying, and eligible under the “international student” category for the Academic Year 2024-25. The Academic Year will commence on July 1, 2024.

    Eligibility

    In addition to the eligibility criteria specified for each of the individual degree programs listed below, a candidate applying under the “international student” category should further fulfill the following conditions:

    • They should be a citizen of a country other than India; AND
    • They should have completed a minimum of ten years of their education in a school/college/University outside India.

    B.A. LLB (Hons)

    Any person who has secured the higher-secondary school qualification [10+2 or an equivalent examination] from a recognized board/school of education is eligible to apply to the program. Applicants must secure a minimum of Forty-five percent (45%) marks or its equivalent grade in a higher-secondary examination or assessment process.

    Students in the final year of their higher-secondary education are also eligible to apply for the program. However, their provisional offer of admission shall be contingent upon the successful completion of their higher-secondary education with the minimum aggregate marks specified above. Selected applicants shall receive a provisional admission offer and be required to produce the mark sheet/transcript showing that they have completed their higher secondary education, failing which they shall lose their right to be considered for admission.

    LLB (Hons)

    Any person who has secured a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized national or international University is eligible to apply to the program. Applicants should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 45% of total marks or equivalent grade. Students in the final year of their Bachelor's degree are also eligible to apply. However, their provisional offer of admission shall be contingent upon the successful corn |a1etion of their Bachelor's degree with the minimum aggregate marks/grade specified above.

    LLM

    Any person who has secured a LLB. degree or equivalent from a recognized national or international university is eligible to apply to the program. Applicants should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 45% of total marks or equivalent grade. Students in the final year of their undergraduate law degree (LL.B or equivalent) are also eligible to apply. However, their provisional offer of admission shall be contingent upon the successful completion of their undergraduate law degree with the minimum aggregate marks specified above.

    MPP

    Any person who has secured a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized national or international University is eligible to apply to this program. Applicants should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 45% of total marks or equivalent grades. Students in the final year of their Bachelor's degree are also eligible to apply. However, their provisional offer of admission shall be contingent upon the successful completion of their Bachelor's degree with the minimum aggregate marks specified above.

    PhD

    Any person who has secured a Master's/ post-graduate degree in (aw or any other discipline from a recognized national or international University is eligible to apply to the program. Applicants should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 55% of total marks or equivalent grade.

    Students in the final year of their Master's/ post-graduate degree are also eligible to apply. However, their provisional final offer of admission shall be contingent upon the successful completion of their Master's degree with the minimum aggregate marks specified above.

    Admission Process

    The University shall admit up to 15 candidates for the B.A., LL.B (Hons.) program, 6 candidates for the LL.B (Hons.), 6 candidates for the LLM 6 candidates for the MPP program, and 3 candidates for the PhD program.

    All candidates seeking admission to each of the above-mentioned programs shall appear for the National Law School Admissions Test (NLSAT-International) for the program that they are seeking admission to. Each of the admissions tests shall consist of a single question paper comprising two parts — Parts A and B. All candidates shall be required to attempt both parts of the question paper. The examination shall be for 120 minutes.

    The test shall be conducted online on April 18 and April 19, 2024, at times to be specified to enrolled candidates (those who have registered and duly completed the payment of application fees). A candidate will be required to appear for the test on one of the two days. The preference of date and time will be sought from the enrolled candidates after the last date for submission of the application form.

    Admissions Test

    Part A

    Part A of the NLSAT-International paper will consist of Multiple-Choice Questions, and shall be for a maximum of 50 marks. 0.25 marks shall be deducted for each wrong answer, and for each unanswered question.

    Part A will constitute the 'first stage of the admissions process. A rank list of candidates will be prepared based on their performance in Part A of the admissions test. To be eligible for evaluation of Part B of the paper, a candidate should have secured more than zero marks in Part A of the paper.

    From amongst these eligible candidates, Part B of the answer scripts will be evaluated in a ratio of 1:5 based on performance in Part A. That is, five candidates per seat available will qualify for evaluation of Part B of the examination.

    Part B

    Part B shall consist of subjective questions, which shall be for a maximum of 25 marks.

    Interview

    A fresh rank list shall be prepared based on the cumulative performance in Parts A and B. To be eligible for the interview, a candidate should have secured more than zero marks in Part B of the paper. Based on this rank list, candidates shall be invited for the interview in a ratio of 1: 3. That is, three candidates per seat available will qualify for evaluation of Part B of the examination. The interview will be for a maximum of 25 marks.

    The final rank list shall be prepared by consolidating the marks scored in Part A, Part B, and the interview. To be offered admission, candidates must secure a cumulative score (sum of Parts A, Part B, and the interview) of 70% or more.

    Requirements for the PhD Programme

    PhD Candidates who secure a cumulative score (sum of Parts A and B) of more than 70% shall be invited to submit a research proposal and make an online oral presentation before the PhD Admissions Review Panel constituted for this purpose. The final offers of admission shall be based on the assessment of the research proposal and oral presentation by the PhD Admissions Review Panel.

    NLSAT-International (online test accessible across the world) - April 18 and April 19, 2024

    Publication of final admissions list - first week of May 2024

    Commencement of the Academic Year - July 1, 2024.
