The DPIIT-IPR Chair at Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation and IP Laws (School of Law and Technology), organized a one-day colloquium titled “Social Media and Entertainment: Whose IP is it Anyway?”. The event explored the complexities of intellectual property (IP) ownership, enforcement, rights, and liabilities in the rapidly evolving landscape of social media, digital entertainment, and artificial intelligence (AI).

    Inaugural Session

The colloquium commenced with an address by Prof. V.C. Vivekanandan, Vice Chancellor of HNLU, who emphasized how technological advancements over the past century have transformed music and cinema by creating an elite class of performers while relegating audiences to passive consumers. He highlighted that social media has disrupted this paradigm, empowering individuals as creators and necessitating a fresh perspective on classical IP jurisprudence.

Mr. Raghvender, the Chief Guest, underscored the instantaneous nature of creativity and dissemination on social media and the complex IP challenges that arise. Ms. Arrpita Bhatt, Legal Counsel, elaborated on the pressing concerns surrounding data sharing and privacy on digital platforms.

Panel Discussion: IP Ownership in the Digital Age

Following the inaugural session, a panel discussion on "Determining IP Ownership of Social Media Creative Content and AI-Generated Content: Legal, Ethical, and Policy Decisions" delved into the legal frameworks governing user-generated content (UGC) and AI-produced works. The panelists provided critical insights into the evolving nature of IP in social media and the entertainment industry, focusing on how ownership rights should be structured.

    The distinguished panel comprised:

    • Mr. G.R. Raghvender, Senior Consultant, Government of India
    • Dr. M. Sakthivel, Professor of Law, TNNLU
    • Dr. Nidhi Hriday Buch, Associate Professor of Law, GNLU
    • Ms. Swapna Sundar, Advocate & Senior Partner, PVS Giridhar Associates
    • Dr. Dayananda Murthy C.P., DPIIT-IPR Chair, Professor, DSNLU

The session was moderated by Ms. Urvi Srivastav and Ms. Apurv Sharma, who facilitated a thought-provoking discussion on the legal, ethical, and policy implications of IP management in the digital space.

    Paper Presentations & Awards

In the post-lunch session, faculty members and research scholars presented their papers, contributing valuable perspectives on the subject. The Best Paper Award was conferred upon Mr. Sarthak Khandelwal and Ms. Arshiya Chauhan, LL. M. Scholars from NLU, Delhi.

The colloquium fostered critical discussions on the intersection of intellectual property, digital content creation, and emerging technologies, reinforcing the need for contemporary legal frameworks to address the challenges posed by the digital era.
