MNLU Mumbai: Certificate Course On The Basics Of Accounting And Securities Analysis [Register By 30th Dec]

Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai (MNLU Mumbai) is one of the premier national law universities established in the State of Maharashtra to promote world-class legal education and research. Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court of India, is the Chancellor of the University.

The Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. The envisaged object of the University is to advance and disseminate learning, and knowledge of the law and legal processes; to develop in the students a sense of responsibility to serve society, and to impart skills on advocacy and justice, legal services, legislation, and law reforms, thereby making law and legal processes efficient instrument of social development. Towards attaining these objectives, MNLU Mumbai offers Five five-year integrated B.A., LL.B. (Hons.), One year LL.M. (Regular), One Year LL.M. (Investment and Securities Law) jointly with NISM, One Year LL.M. (Professional), M.A. (Executive) in Mediation and Conflict Resolution, Ph.D. program among other diplomas and short-term courses. The University also runs various certificate courses such as Mediation, Data Protection Law, Cyber Law, IPR, Arbitration, and foreign languages such as German and Spanish regularly.

About The Course

This course focuses on making law students conversant with basic principles in accounting and securities analysis which are critical in understanding the rationale for understanding regulatory compliance.

Course Outline

• Basics of accounting and corporate finance in analyzing the company
• How to read and interpret the financial statements of the company
• Various components of company analysis: Quantitative and Qualitative factors
• Valuation and its approaches

Course Outcome

After this course, the participants would learn:

• How to read the annual report of the company, particularly, the financial statements of the company
• How to analyze the securities, particularly, equity shares
• What are the valuation methods in general, and their respective applications?

Course Delivery

The course will be delivered by NISM faculty. The lead faculty would be Dr. Jinesh Panchali. He has more than 30 years of experience in academics, consulting, and academic administration. Jinesh has an MBA with a specialization in Finance, a Ph.D. in Management from the Faculty of Management Studies (1994), The M.S. University of Baroda, and a CMA from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. He has taught courses in the area of Finance and Strategy, like, M&A, corporate finance, corporate valuation, and corporate restructuring at various IIMs and institutions of national repute. He has served the Indian Institute of Capital Markets and is Head of the Knowledge Management subsidiary of Financial Technology Group. Before joining NISM, he operated a proprietary advisory firm, Arham Advisors.

Grading

Assessment would be as under:

• Mid-term exam (after 15 hours) (MCQ test) (50 marks)
  
• End-term exam (Assignment / Case study) (50 marks)

Awarding Certificate Candidates eligible for award of Certificate shall be jointly issued by Vice Chancellor MNLU, and Director, NISM.

Instruction Method

Classes would be conducted through Google Classroom and WebEx Platform and the in-house studio facility of the partners. Students are expected to regularly consult the course web page, as important information may be uploaded regularly. Presentation and suggested readings would be uploaded regularly. Assignments would also be posted there. Significant student interaction and meaningful participation are expected in each class.

The course will have periodical quizzes, discussions on short cases, group work, workshops, presentations, and discussions on contemporary issues.

Attendance

75% attendance is mandatory to qualify to write the End Term Exam. MNLU Mumbai's UG Programme rules will be applicable for minimum marks required for the issue of certificates, and disqualification of candidates due to lack of adequate attendance.
