The Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to Ramaiah Chandra Sekhar. The judgment, rendered by Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta, comes as a relief to Sekhar, who was embroiled in a legal battle with the State of Andhra Pradesh.

The case, stemming from an impugned final judgment and order dated 23rd December 2023 in CRLP No. 7969/2023 passed by the High Court of Andhra Pradesh at Amravati, had garnered widespread attention due to its ramifications. Sekhar, the petitioner, sought Special Leave to Appeal (Crl.) No(s). 1811/2024, contesting the aforementioned judgment.

On 12th February 2024, the Court, after hearing arguments from both sides, made several notable orders. Firstly, it granted Sekhar liberty to implead the first informant as a party respondent. Subsequently, it issued notice, returnable in four weeks, and granted Sekhar the liberty to serve notice through the Standing Counsel for the respondent/state. Additionally, the Court ordered an ad interim release on bail for Sekhar, subject to certain conditions, in connection with FIR No. 215 of 2023 registered at P.S. Chinna Bazar, Nellore.

In a follow-up hearing on 18th March 2024, the Court addressed a petition seeking anticipatory bail for Sekhar. Despite vehement opposition from the learned counsel for the respondent/state, the Court considered the circumstances. It noted that Sekhar had cooperated with the investigation, and in light of this, it decided to make the interim order granted on 12th February 2024 absolute, effectively granting him anticipatory bail.

The anticipatory bail was granted against the charges under sections 465 and 468 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860 and Section 443 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973 and other.
