Professor Avirup Bose and Professor Natasha Nayak, assistant professors at the Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) of the OP Jindal Global University (JGU), have been awarded the 2018 Thomas Edison Innovation Fellowship award. JGLS is the only law school in Asia whose professors have been awarded the prestigious fellowship award.

JGLS faculty members will join a series of invitation-only conferences over the course of a year in which Edison Fellows study and discuss a structured curriculum, engage in roundtable discussions with expert senior scholars and industry representatives, and share, examine and collaborate on new areas of research on the moral and economic value of patented innovation. The year-long non-resident fellowship program brings together a group of scholars to develop research papers on patent law and policy and culminates in the production of substantial academic research papers that are published in law journals or other peer-reviewed academic journals.

Both scholars went through an extensive application process prior to being selected for the fellowship from the Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property (CPIP) at George Mason University School of Law, Virginia, USA.

Congratulating the faculty members for their outstanding accomplishment, Professor C Raj Kumar, founding vice chancellor, JGU and dean of JGLS, said, “This prestigious award to two of JGLS’s faculty members is a reinstatement of JGU’s leadership in initiating interdisciplinary and high-impact research in the area of innovation and law. Our university has been at the forefront of promoting research and knowledge creation in law and related fields. I congratulate, Professor Bose and Professor Nayak for this outstanding recognition.”

Avirup Bose currently serves as assistant professor and assistant director, Centre for International Trade and Economics Laws, JGLS. He holds law degrees from the WB University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) and Harvard Law School had earlier become the first Indian to be recognized as a “Next Generation Antitrust Scholar” in 2016. Professor Bose’s area of research concentrates on regulatory issues and innovation.

Professor Natasha Nayak is assistant professor and assistant director, Centre for International Trade and Economic, JGLS and holds an LLM degree from George Washington University Law School, a BA LLB (Hons) degree from NUJS, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics for Competition law from King's College, London. Professor Nayak’s research focuses on the emerging interface between IP and competition, especially in the pharmaceuticals and the ICT sectors. Professor Nayak is currently a visiting fellow at The Hoover Institution, Stanford University.

Both Professor Bose and Professor Nayak are also fellows of the Jindal Initiative on Research in IP and Competition (JIRICO), an initiative of JGU that focusses on cutting edge research in areas of high-technology innovation, intellectual property, challenges at the interface of patent rights and competition. JIRICO works with experts in the fields of intellectual property law, competition law, economics and management and provides a unique platform to facilitate dialogue among Indian industry partners, innovators, law makers, regulators and academicians.

Edison Fellowship is one of the centerpieces of CPIP’s mission to promote a better academic discussion about intellectual property rights with substantial scholarship produced from rigorous research that examines the moral and economic value of patented innovation.
