MP Amritpal Singh who is currently under Preventive Detention under National Security Act (NSA) has filed a plea in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions to the Union Government to release him and allow him to attend the parliamentary sessions and Republic Day ceremony on 26th January.
If a member is absent from Parliamentary sittings continuously for 60 days, they lose their membership. As per the petition, Singh has been absent for a total of 46 days.
Amritpal Singh was elected as MP in 2024 General Elections from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency. He is also a head of organisation “Waris Punjab De”.
The plea states that a formal request to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha seeking permission to attend the ongoing parliamentary sessions was sent on November 30.
Singh also submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner requesting permission to attend the ongoing parliamentary sessions. However, no response has been received till date.
It further stated that Amritpal, in his capacity as a Member of Parliament, is obligated to attend parliamentary sessions and participate in legislative debates to effectively voice the concerns of his constituents and fulfils his constitutional responsibilities.
Advocates Hakam Singh and Amrita Negi for the petitioner.
Petition settled by: Senior Advocate G.K. Mann
