The Punjab & Haryana High Court today orally said that the Union Government can take assistance from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in case economic offences are alleged to have been committed by the police officials involved in the Lawrence Bishnoi TV interview in police custody case.
Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Lapita Banerji while perusing the sealed cover report of Special DGP Prabodh Kumar on progress of investigation and action taken against police officials involved, orally asked Union Government if any proceeds of crime comes or economic offences are committed then ED's assistance can be taken.
"We will pass a direction to the ED for help if required", orally said Justice Grewal.
ASG Satya Pal Jain submitted that, "Union is ready to comply if any directions are passed."
ASG Satya Pal Jain further submitted that the Union Government has already granted permission to the Punjab Government for installation of jammers in the prisons and no further permission is required.
Considering that the Amicus Curiae Tanu Bedi was not present, the Court adjourned the matter.
The Court was hearing its suo moto case against the use of mobile phones in the prisons.
After SIT was constituted by the High Court, it revealed that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's first interview "glorifying crime and criminals" was conducted when he was in CIA premises in Punjab's Kharar and the second interview was in a Jaipur jail.
