An election petition has been filed before the Punjab & Haryana High Court challenging the election of Chandigarh Member of Parliament (MP) Manish Tiwari of the Congress party, who emerged victorious in the 18th Lok Sabha election.
The petition filed by BJP's candidate Sanjay Tandon sought directions to annul Tiwari's election and to declare him as the duly elected MP from Chandigarh.
Tandon accused Tiwari, along with the Congress (INC) and Aam Aadmi Party of making misleading "false promises", including offering financial incentives and job guarantees to voters, which allegedly impacted the minds of the voters.
"Numerous complaints from the Bharatiya Janata Party workers were given at such a stage to the Returning Officer, but no action was taken...the complaint denotes that on 7.5.24, Mahila Nayay Guarantee Cards were made by INDI Alliance workers, and Congress workers," it added.
Similarly, various workers of congress circulated and filled up the Guarantee cards by promising 1 lakh rupees to all the poor women and 1 lakh salary as job as per their guarantee card, the plea stated.
The plea further submitted that while endorsing Tiwari, former PM Manmohan Singh used the national emblem which is a 'corrupt practice' under section 123(3) under the Representation of People's Act.
The matter is likely to be listed on September 16, before the High Court.
