The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices on a contempt petition filed against various State authorities for allegedly permitting Diljit Dosanjh to sing alcohol related songs in his Ludhiana concert, in violation of its 2019 direction.
The High Court in Reet Mohinder v. State of Punjab had ordered the DGPs of both the States as well as the Chandigarh UT administration to ensure that songs glorifying liquor, wine, drugs and violence are not played in live shows.
Justice Harkesh Manuja issued notices to Principal Home Secretary of Punjab, Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana Police and the Punjab Pollution Control Board on a plea filed by a Chandigarh resident.
It is alleged that Diljit sang songs titled “5 Tara Theeke, Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya) and Patiala Peg” in the live concert held at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on December 31.
It was submitted that even after telephonic request to District Program officer, Ludhiana and District Child Protection Officer, no effort was made by them to stop Diljit from singing alcohol promoting songs. It is alleged that a child also came on the stage and danced with the singer.
"The Administration did not stop the singer is clear case of noncompliance of the directions so issued by the Court, which shows the defiance to the said orders and the songs sung," the plea stated.
"It was shocking to see used alcohol bottles were found in the next morning of the concert. Punjab Agricultural University is holy place in which high level research work takes place in the field of agriculture but holding such kind of musical concerts on the residential/educational area is nothing but an act of submission to state sponsored event," it stated further.
The matter is now posted on February 7.
