Justice Pradyumna Kumar Mohanty, former Judge of the Orissa High Court passed away today in Cuttack. He was 79-years-old.

Justice Mohanty was born on 02.01.1945. After completing his schooling, he obtained a degree in law and was enrolled as an Advocate on December 09, 1968.

He primarily practised civil, criminal, constitutional, service, educational and revenue matters in the original, appellate and revisional sides of the High Court and Subordinate Courts at Cuttack.

He was elevated as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on January 17, 1996, and held the office for more than a decade before demitting the same on January 01, 2007.

The State Government appointed a commission headed by him to make an inquiry into 'Kalinganagar police firing' in Jajpur district, which claimed the lives of 14 tribal people in a clash at the Kalinganagar steel complex while protesting the construction of a boundary wall for a proposed mega steel plant on January 02, 2006.

In his report, the commission gave a clean chit to the State authorities and observed that there was no option for the Executive Magistrate than to pass orders for opening live firing on the riotous mob when all deterrent measures failed to scare away and disperse the mob.

Justice Mohanty also headed the Judicial Commission of Enquiry which was constituted to probe the infamous Pipili gang rape and murder case of 2011.
